There is an interesting verse in Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty;
He will save, He will rejoice over thee with joy;
He will rest in His love,
He will joy over thee with singing.
Many people look at God in the Old Testament and say, “He was an angry God.” Then they look at the New Testament and say, “Yeshua is love.” But my Bible says, Yeshua and Yahweh are One with Holy Spirit and their character and attributes are unchangeable.
In Malachi 3:6 Yahweh says, “For I am the LORD, I change not.” And in Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” And in James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”
Let’s take a look at that last line from Zephaniah 3:17: He will joy over thee with singing.
We will start with SINGING: Strong’s #7440 and it looks like this–
Here is the Strong’s definition: רִנָּה rinnâh, rin-naw’; properly, a creaking (or shrill sound), i.e. shout (of joy or grief):—cry, gladness, joy, proclamation, rejoicing, shouting, sing(-ing), triumph.
And here is the letter meanings from right to left:
Resh 200 = Insufficiency, Poverty. Picture: Head Means: Head, Chief, Beginning, Highest, Most Important, a Person, Human Reasoning vs. Obedience. (When we allow human reasoning to be our master, our head, poverty of the Spirit results.)
Nun 50 = Restoration, Holy Spirit, Jubilee. Means: Life or Action
Hey 5 = Grace. Means: Revelation – 5 is the number of Torah, Behold, Give Attention – (at the end of a word: comes from letter before)
Our God, the Highest and Most Important Head over all, Restores us to Life with His Grace and Revelation. He stirs us to Life with His song.
And, He does it with JOY. Let’s take a look. JOY is Strong’s #1523
It looks like this–
Here is the definition given: גִּיל gîyl, gheel; or (by permutation) גּוּל gûwl; a primitive root; properly, to spin round (under the influence of any violent emotion), i.e. usually rejoice, or (as cringing) fear:—be glad, joy, be joyful, rejoice.
The Hebrew word means to “spin around under violent emotion,” or basically to dance. So Zephaniah 3:17 is more accurately translated as, “Yahweh, your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His Love, He will dance over you with singing.”
Now how is that for an angry God? No, our God is angry with sin and all that would draw us away from Him and His love, but He is 100% love and joy when it comes to us.
Now take a look at the letters:
Gimmel 3= Divine perfection Means: Camel, Generous Rich man, To Lift up, to Give, to Benefit, to Toil
Yod 10 = The outcome or completion of something. Means: Hand, Right Arm, Power, Right hand of God’s power, a Deed Done, To Work, to Cover, Allow, Hollow, Open Hand
Lamed 30 = Blood of Messiah, Dedication to a task. Means: Staff, Goad or Stick, to Teach or Instruct, Authority, to Control, Urge Forward, a Tongue
God will Generously Lift you up and Give you His Right Arm of Power to help you and then Teach you and Urge you forward with His song.
I’ve used this following quote before, but I must do so again. This is from Dennis Jernigan, a Christian psalmist, and fully delivered homosexual preacher’s son. He now the father of nine children and ministers in song for the Lord. He rewrote Zephaniah 3:17 in his own words:
The Eternal, Self-existent God, the God who is three in One, He who dwells in the center of your being, is a powerful, valiant warrior. He has come to set you free, to keep you safe and to bring you victory. He is cheered and beams with joy and takes pleasure in your presence. He has engraved a place for Himself in you, and there He quietly rests in His love and affection for you. He cannot contain Himself at the thought of you, and with the greatest of joy, spins around wildly with anticipation over you. He has placed you above all other creations and in the highest place in His priorities. In fact, He shouts and sings in triumph joyfully proclaiming the gladness of His heart in a song of rejoicing, all because of you.
We are the most blessed people on earth. No other god loves like our God. No other idol or person loves like this.
Another story, I’ve told before. I was grumbling and complaining one day, marching down the steps to my basement with a basket full of laundry. “God, You said…and it hasn’t happened. We have waited, prayed, done everything You told us to do, and still, Your word hasn’t manifest.”
Before I uttered another word, this song from 1928 — yes, my mom and dad used to sing it to us on our family car trips —“I can’t give you anything but love, baby. It’s the only thing I’m plenty of, baby.”
My frustration turned to laughter and I knew the war in my soul was over. His ways are not our ways and sometimes He has to quiet us with His songs — His songs of love.
Focus this week on Yeshua and His great love for you. Listen in the night as He may waken you with a song. We are blessed by God Almighty, King over all the universe. The One who holds the nations in a bucket and measures out the span of the seas in the palm of His hand–Sings and Dances over you and me with Joy. Shalom, my friends.
