On this day, September 7, 2021, using God’s lunar calendar, the Biblical year 5782 begins. It is also a Sabbath year or a Shemita year. The word Shemita means to let it rest, release, let drop–Sabbath.
Just as God commanded that the 7th day of every week be a Sabbath day of rest, He also called for a 7th year Sabbath rest for the Land. This sabbath is called the Shemita.
Leviticus 25:1-7 And the Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a Sabbath to the Lord. 3 Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather its fruit; 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the Lord. You shall neither sow your field nor prune your vineyard. 5 What grows of its own accord of your harvest you shall not reap, nor gather the grapes of your untended vine, for it is a year of rest for the land. 6 And the Sabbath produce of the land shall be food for you: for you, your male and female servants, your hired man, and the stranger who dwells with you, 7 for your livestock and the beasts that are in your land — all its produce shall be for food.
And the question always comes, “What will we eat if we are not sowing or harvesting? Here is the answer in Leviticus 25:20-22.
‘And if you say, “What shall we eat in the seventh year, since we shall not sow nor gather in our produce?” 21 Then I will command My blessing on you in the sixth year, and it will bring forth produce enough for three years. 22 And you shall sow in the eighth year, and eat old produce until the ninth year; until its produce comes in, you shall eat of the old harvest.
This year of Sabbath rest for the land is a huge test of faith for Jewish farmers and those who eat their crops. It calls upon God to demonstrate His faithfulness to provide for His people and it calls upon the people to believe that He will.
In a Sabbath year, you can eat the produce that grows on its own, ie. the apples from your established apple tree or the tomatoes that may have grown on their own in your compost heap. Still, the command is not to plant or harvest, but to rest and give your animals and laborers rest.
While these commands were written for the land of Israel, there has been a pattern of events happening that have touched other parts of the world. For example, economic crashes.
All the greatest economic crashes tend to take place at the same time of year,” When is it? September to October. If we consider the greatest crashes in history, do any of them take place at the end of the seven-year cycle of the Shemita? The answer is, ‘Yes.’ Every single one of them does. The pattern seems to be growing with intensity.
The two biggest single-day stock market crashes in U.S. history took place on Sept. 17, 2001, and Sept. 29, 2008. In the 2008 crash, the Dow fell 777.7 points. On hearing the news, the House of Representatives voted down a $700 billion bailout deal.
Here is a list showing the pattern:
1916-1917- Shemita/Sabbath Year – 40% of U.S. Stock market value wiped out. German, Austro-Hungarian, Russian, and Ottoman Empires collapsed. Britain, the world’s greatest empire was almost bankrupt—All during this one Shemita year.

Some are calling this the Jubilee year. But the Jubilee year occurs every 50th year…following seven cycles of the Shemitah or Sabbath year. In other words, Israel was told to let their land rest for an entire year every 7 years. After 7 cycles of this or 49 years, they were told to have a Jubilee year on the 50th year.
According to Leviticus 25:8-13, during Jubilee, slaves, and prisoners would be freed. Debts would be forgiven and the blessings of God would be particularly manifest. It too was another Sabbath year for the land. The last Jubilee year began on September 14, 2015, so there will not be another one until 2065. (FYI–Not all Jewish scholars or rabbis agree with this dating so if you search this out, you will find several different dates.)
There is still another twist in the story. Mark Biltz, who has studied the Biblical calendar for years, was recently on The Jim Bakker Show. It is a short 7min. video but it packs a punch. He suggests that the Tribulation could begin during this Shemita year. With all that’s been happening in our world, it is difficult to completely discount this possibility. But time will tell. Here is the link for those who would like to see and hear it.
In closing, I have to say there are also many prophetic voices and financial analysts who share a brighter picture. Most of them are declaring hard times. But they are also declaring blessings as God’s sovereign hand covers believers, much like His people were protected in Goshen during seven of the ten the plagues in Egypt. Here is a recent video from Sid Roth, you may enjoy watching.
In the end, only God knows what tomorrow will bring.
The bottom line is this. If we have given our lives to Jesus and have an ongoing relationship with the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, we are in covenant with Him. That means regardless of the circumstances, He is with us and will provide all that we need to see us through. We can either trust Him, do what He says, and be at peace or not trust Him and be fearful. It’s our choice.
He told me at the beginning of this year to write FAITHFUL on this year. I am standing in faith in His word to me and pray that you will join me. The world needs His light, His love, His peace, His strength, and His power. AND—we are His carriers, His representatives. In the darkness, let’s shine the light of hope and glorify our God. Have a blessed 5782.
