Dinner with God – The Peace or Fellowship Offering

The Peace or Fellowship Offering is the last of the five voluntary offerings. The worshiper chose when and if to take them to the priest. Unlike the sin offerings, the Peace offering and the Grain offering were for thanksgiving and rededication. The Peace or Fellowship offering was more like a celebration because the priests and others from the community ate it with the worshiper.

Here are the scriptures of instructions about this offering. You will note that they are much like the burnt offering. You will also note that God gives the same instructions three times depending on the choice of the animal sacrificed.

‘When his offering is a sacrifice of a peace offering, if he offers it of the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the Lord. 2 And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of meeting; and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall sprinkle the blood all around on the altar. 3 Then he shall offer from the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire to the Lord. The fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, 4 the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the flanks, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver above the kidneys, he shall remove; 5 and Aaron’s sons shall burn it on the altar upon the burnt sacrifice, which is on the wood that is on the fire, as an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the Lord.

6 ‘If his offering as a sacrifice of a peace offering to the Lord is of the flock, whether male or female, he shall offer it without blemish. 7 If he offers a lamb as his offering, then he shall offer it before the Lord. 8 And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it before the tabernacle of meeting; and Aaron’s sons shall sprinkle its blood all around on the altar.

9 ‘Then he shall offer from the sacrifice of the peace offering, as an offering made by fire to the Lord, its fat and the whole fat tail which he shall remove close to the backbone. And the fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, 10 the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the flanks, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver above the kidneys, he shall remove; 11 and the priest shall burn them on the altar as food, an offering made by fire to the Lord.

12 ‘And if his offering is a goat, then he shall offer it before the Lord. 13 He shall lay his hand on its head and kill it before the tabernacle of meeting; and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle its blood all around on the altar. 14 Then he shall offer from it his offering, as an offering made by fire to the Lord. The fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, 15 the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the flanks, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver above the kidneys, he shall remove; 16 and the priest shall burn them on the altar as food, an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma; all the fat is the Lord’s.

17 ‘This shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings: you shall eat neither fat nor blood.’ ” Leviticus 3:1-17

Only part of the sacrifice Peace offering was consumed on the altar. All the fat was an offering to the Lord on the altar. Fat was the richest and best part of the animal. It was burnt until it turned to smoke. This was an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma. Then the rest of the animal was cooked. The breast and right thigh were for the priests. The rest was eaten in a communal meal with the LORD and His family. Leviticus 7:30-33

This communion with God was only possible by the shedding of the blood of a perfect sacrifice. Our communion with the LORD is only possible through the blood shed at the cross by Yeshua.

Because of His sacrifice, we have peace with God. It isn’t possible without Him.

Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5:6-11 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

All these benefits are only possible through Yeshua’s perfect sacrifice.

In Psalm 107:22 we see this Fellowship Meal. Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about His glorious acts. NLT Fellowship meals were times of great joy and testimonies of God’s goodness. The Last Supper that Yeshua shared with His disciples was a Fellowship meal. He broke a piece of unleavened bread—a grain offering, they ate together and even sang together.

Mark 14:23-26 Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many. 25 Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

The hymn they likely sang was Psalm 136, the great Hallel or great praise. It is the song recounting God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt. Here are the first three verses:

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. 2 Oh, give thanks to the God of gods! For His mercy endures forever. 3 Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords! For His mercy endures forever:

When we engage in true worship everything in us desires to do it. We are willing to worship and delight in giving God praise. It’s not only singing songs, raising hands, and declaring His greatness. Our hearts are overflowing with love for Him.

So whether we bring burnt offerings, sin offerings, trespass offerings, grain or peace offerings, let’s do it with our entire beings.

Christian brothers, I ask you from my heart to give your bodies to God because of His loving-kindness to us. Let your bodies be a living and holy gift given to God. He is pleased with this kind of gift. This is the true worship that you should give Him. Romans 12:1 New Life Version.

Happy Passover—Shalom ♥
