“Treasures from the Secret Place”
Chapter 14
Psalm 91:4c
“His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”
This eight word phrase is full of treasures. So much is said about spiritual warfare these days and you are about to discover one of the strongest weapons we have against the enemy. Just the fact that you are digging into these studies is giving the enemy a migraine. He is losing ground and he knows it.
“His truth shall be thy shield and buckler…” Truth is difficult to come by in our world. There are so many ‘feelings,’ personal opinions, and all out deception thrown into the mix. Finding truth is a challenge.
Let’s see what His truth looks like.
Truth: #571
571 : A feminine noun meaning truth, faithfulness. It is frequently connected with lovingkindness (Prov 3:3; Hos 4:1) and occasionally with other terms such as peace (2 Kings 20:19); righteousness (Isa 48:1); and justice (Ps 111:7). To walk in truth is to conduct oneself according to God’s holy standards (1 Kings 2:4; 3:6; Ps 86:11; Isa 38:3). Truth was the barometer for measuring both one’s word (1 Kings 22:16; Dan 11:2) and actions (Gen 24:49; Josh 2:14). Accordingly, God’s words (Ps 119:160; Dan 10:21) and actions (Neh 9:33) are characterized by this Hebrew term also. Indeed, God is the only God of truth (Ex 34:6; 2 Chron 15:3; Ps 31:5[:6 ]).
<539> : A primitive root verb meaning to be firm, to build up, to support, to nurture, or to establish. The primary meaning is that of providing stability and confidence, like a baby would find in the arms of a parent. It is used to signify support of a pillar (2 Kings 18:16); nurture and nourishment (Num 11:12; Ruth 4:16; thus, a nurse, 2 Sam 4:4); cradling in one’s arms (Isa 60:4); a house firmly founded (1 Sam 2:35; 25:28); a secure nail that finds a solid place to grip (Isa 22:23); a lasting permanence (Ps 89:28[:29 ]; with negative particle, Jer 15:18). Metaphorically, the word conveys the notion of faithfulness and trustworthiness, such that one could fully depend on (Deut 7:9; Job 12:20; Ps 19:7[:8 ]; Isa 55:3; Mic 7:5). Therefore, the word can also signify certitude or assurance (Deut 28:66; Job 24:22; Hos 5:9) and belief, in the sense of receiving something as true and sure (Gen 15:6; Ex 4:5; 2 Chron 20:20; Ps 78:22; Isa 53:1; Jonah 3:5).

TRUTH: When we dwell in the Secret Place, God, the Ultimate Leader Births us through every Trial and Test because of His Covenant with us. Truth is revealed in humility out of a hidden relationship with God. His Covenant word is faithful and does not change.
Next in our phrase is the word shield. Now if you’ve been to the movies, you’ve seen all kinds of shields. There are some interesting descriptions for this shield of truth:
Shield:
6793 A feminine noun referring to a hook. It refers to a sharp instrument used to gouge and lead away prisoners (Amos 4:2); a shield, a large shield, a buckler. It refers to a large, probably rectangular shield used in battle (1 Sam 17:7,41; 1 Kings 10:16; Jer 46:3; Ezek 23:24). Goliath’s shield was carried by someone for him. It is used figuratively often: God as a Shield (Ps 5:12[:13 ]); of God as a Shield or a Warrior (Ps 35:2); of God’s faithfulness or truth as a shield (Ps 91:4); cold, coolness. It refers to the impression given through the senses of something not hot, like ice or snow (Prov 25:13).
<6791> : A masculine noun referring to a hook, a thorn. It refers to a sharp, prickly plant or to individual spines sticking out from its branches. It is often used figuratively of undesirable places or locations (Job 5:5; Prov 22:5). The word is also used of sharp hooks used to lead prisoners (Amos 4:2).
Job 5:5; Prov. 22:5; Amos 4:2(KJV, NASB, ƒinn¹h [6793,I]).

SHIELD: His shield of Truth is Righteousness that stands against every curse of the enemy. It Restores Life to every circumstance with Revelation that comes from the Holy Spirit Life in us.
In other words His shield of truth renews our mind, will and emotions with His word and stirs us to make Him and His word the focus, bringing raising us to life and putting our faith into action.
Here is what the shield of that century looked like. The soldiers would often stand side by
side and place their shields edge to edge forming a wall of defense:
Buckler: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler
Now a buckler is smaller. This one is rectangular but many of them are circular.
5507 : A feminine noun referring to a small shield, a buckler. It refers to a defensive weapon used to ward off the attacks and blows of an enemy. It is used figuratively of God’s faithfulness to His people as their shield or protection (Ps 91:4).
<5503> : A primitive root verb meaning to travel as merchants, to trade. It refers to a merchant, a commercial business man, a traveling trader (Gen 23:16; 37:28; 1 Kings 10:28; Isa 23:2; Ezek 27:12); the activity of carrying on trade, business (Gen 34:10,21). It has the sense of to go back and forth, to wander; to throb (of the heart) (Ps 38:10[:11 ]; Jer 14:18); to travel round (specifically as a peddaler, to palpitate-go about, merchant, occupy with, trade, traffic.
= Samekh 60 = Pride, Conceit, Earthly. Means: To lean upon, Hold, or Support – the heart of God
= Chet 8 = New Beginnings. Means: Fence, Gate, or Tent wall – separates and connects
= Resh 200 = Insufficiency. Means: Head, Chief, Beginning
His BUCKLER of Truth is something we can Lean on for Support. It is a Fence that Connects us to God and Separates us from the enemy. It is the Head over all things turning our Insufficiency to complete provision.
Go gave me an interesting picture of all of this, especially the buckler:
~~~Journal notes~~~
November 20, 2005
Today as I read, I stopped on the word “buckler”—His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
‘Your truth not only shields me from the enemy and empowers my intercession, but it also moves me to travel with You to occupy enemy territory, trade with others in ministry and teaching, giving and receiving. So abiding is more than standing still protected. Abiding is being empowered to travel in protection to do Your will. Is that right, Lord?’
“Yes, you are seeing in part. There is more. Buckler is also Me pedaling around you, hemming you in to do My will with Love holding you back from your own good ideas. At times it will feel like taunting and you will be frustrated and angry, but the second you surrender, there will be peace. The second you surrender you can get back on our tandem, letting Me do the choosing and the leading, and we will go. My truth will set you free. My truth will bring surrender of your will and set you free in Mine! What joy is that place of unity with Me. What joy awaits all those who look to Me for help and surrender to My plan, My purpose, My will. It’s easy—Just Look Up!”
About a month later at a church worship night, God gave me another piece of understanding. A depressed young woman was asking for prayer. As she shared her story, I suddenly saw, in my spirit, Jesus circling her on a bicycle. As He went, He was declaring truth to her.
“I am your Deliverer. I am your Peace. I love you with an everlasting love. Nothing can separate you from My love. I am with you, you have nothing to fear. No weapon formed against you will prosper.” On and on He proclaimed truth. I spoke those words to her and her entire countenance changed. She was set free to believe again. His Truth set her free. It became her shield and buckler protecting her from the taunts and lies of the enemy.
If you are caught in the middle of confusion, depression, pain, fear, timidity, etc., ask Him for His shield and buckler. Ask Him to give you His word on the matter and watch Him change your heart. The circumstance may remain the same but He will lift you above them and give you new perspective. The Secret Place is a place of victory as you lean on Him for support in faith.
May you be encircled with His Truth today and step out in faith to let His light shine through you.
