What’s in a Name?

While Yeshua was more likely born in September or early October during the Feast of Tabernacles, we celebrated His birth yesterday on December 25th.  But Yeshua is worthy of celebration every day of the year.  In this last week before 2024 begins, I am going to share some thoughts about Him I’ve shared before.  In these next five days may we be reminded of Who He is, that He lives in us, and be reminded Who He wants to be through us.

In Isaiah 9:6, Yahweh declares Who He is.  Note that when a Hebrew children are named, their names are often chosen to reflect their destiny, who they will be in life.  Parents are very careful about the names they choose.  In this passage, the names are declaring Yeshua’s destiny.

Isaiah 9:6 says, For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

We will start with Wonderful.

“And His name shall be called WONDERFUL…” Isaiah 9:6

What does Wonderful mean? It’s only when we see it in the original language of Hebrew, that we see the full picture. We use the word wonderful every day but when it’s applied to our Savior, it takes on glorious meaning.

The name Wonderful in this verse is #6382 in Strong’s Concordance.  It is spelled pele’ (peh’-leh) and it means a miracle, marvelous thing, wonderful or wonderfully.

But its primary root is #6381 – pala’ (paw-law)–It means properly, perhaps to separate, i.e. distinguish, by implication, to be or make great, difficult or wonderful. In the KJV: to accomplish, (arise…too, be too) hard, hidden, things too high, to be, do, show marvelous things, miracles, perform, separate, make singular, to be great, make wonderful or do wondrous things.

WONDERFUL in Hebrew is spelled read right to left: Aleph, Lamed, Pey

Pey = 80 New governmental order.  It means: Mouth, to Speak or Open, Beginning.

Lamed = 30  Blood of Messiah, Dedication to a task.  It means: Staff, Goad or Stick, to Teach or Instruct, Authority, to Control, Urge Forward, a Tongue.

Aleph = 1 God, Echad, Unity, Unique-no other like it.    It means: Ox head, Strength or Leader, Most Important, First, the Strength and Power of a Leader.

When you put all of this together, the WONDERFUL name of Yeshua means: (Aleph) As God, the Most Important Leader, (Pey) He spoke into existence a New Governmental Order. He (Lamed) Dedicated Himself to the Task to teach and instruct us with authority. – And through His teaching, His signs, miracles, and wonders, He drew men to the truth of God’s love and changed the trajectory of their lives.

Now that is WONDERFUL!!!

In our time with Him today, let’s consider our identity.  The God of wonders lives in us. Ask to Him what He wants to do today and then listen and step out to share God’s love as He directs with our world.

Shalom ♥
