The Lampstand/Candlestick – Part 8 – The Spirit of Might

Today we are going to take a closer look at the second pair of lamps on the Lampstand. Last week we uncovered the function and benefits of the Spirit of Counsel. Now we will look deeper at the Spirit of Might.

Usually when we see the word ‘might’ in text, it appears to reflect physical strength. We may think of Sampson in Judges 16:29-30 who took hold of the pillars in the temple and pushed them down with all his might, killing everyone there. Or maybe David comes to mind. He told King Saul about killing a lion and a bear singlehandedly in 1 Samuel 17:34-36. Because of this incident, he felt confident to go against Goliath.

Physical strength can be expressed through the Spirit of Might, but it is not the only way it is manifest.

Let’s look at Luke 1:30-38,

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”

35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”

38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

In the New Testament, the words power and might are mentioned in each other’s definitions. They appear interchangeably throughout the Bible.

Keith Miller in his book, Surrender to the Spirit, wrote, “The might of God is the vigor and strength of God—not only in you but also upon you to fulfill the heavenly blueprint He has for your life.” To me this sounds like grace—the power to do God’s will.

We may go to God wanting to know what to do about a matter. He answers with wise counsel. But we may think we lack the power to follow through. We may question our physical ability, our mental capability, our courage, or our willingness. It is then that we need to ask God for the Spirit of Might.

when Gabriel spoke the words to Mary, the call appeared to be an impossibility. Yet, the Spirit of Might was present to give her the courage or faith needed to say yes.

Paul wrote a prayer in Ephesians 3:16-20. In it he says, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with MIGHT through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Later, in Ephesians 6:10, he says, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His Might.

Strength, power, and might are all found IN THE LORD. We may be weaklings, but in Christ, we have all we need to do His will when we ask for the Spirit of Might.

Whistleblowers are coming out to the woodwork these days exposing wickedness. At the risk of their jobs, their reputations, and their lives, they are stepping forward to partner with God to bring about His will. Whether the whistleblowers recognize them or not, the Spirit of Counsel and Might are present.

When we act on God’s word, there is a one hundred percent guarantee that God will be present to equip us for the task. In Colossians 1:10-12, Paul says that he prays– that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

Did you catch that last part of verse eleven? Paul is praying that believers have the might and power to be patient in longsuffering with joy.

The presence of the Spirit of Might guarantees God’s presence but does not guarantee the task will be pleasant or short-termed. Living the Christian life is a battle and it is becoming more so all the time.

We must lean on Him. He must be our source of peace, strength, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and so forth. Our strengths, talents, or resources of any kind will not meet the need. Only God can meet the need and the Spirit of Might is available to us. God’s might is without limit.

Listen to the promises God made in Isaiah 46:4-5, 9-11, to the house Jacob, of which we are part. (Romans 11:17).

Even to your old age, I am He, And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.

5 “To whom will you liken Me, and make Me equal And compare Me, that we should be alike?

9 Remember the former things of old,

(God is telling them to remember His words of the past and remember His faithfulness to keep them.)

For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,’

11 Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have purposed it; I will also do it.

He is saying—Remember who I Am and recognize when you do My will, you have all the help you need to accomplish it.

What are you facing? What counsel has God given you? Ask for the Spirit of Might and answer the call. He is ever leading us in triumph. (2 Corinthians 2:14)

Shalom ♥

  1. This has been a powerful word today. I thank you so much for it. I’ve been struggling since last year over the death of my son. This word today has been so powerful and it has given me what I need to be victorious. Whatever I am facing I can ask God to give me counsel for it. I can ask for the spirit of might and answer the call. He will lead me in triumph in Jesus name.
