We are considering the final pieces of the Tabernacle. We’ve investigated the two curtains draped over the Tabernacle, and now we will examine the two coverings.
Exodus 26:14 “You shall also make a covering of ram skins dyed red for the tent, and a covering of badger skins above that.
Let’s begin with the word covering.
Covering: is Strong’s Concordance #4372 from #<3680> כָּסָה Hey, Samekh, Kaf
Its definition is: to cover (for clothing or secrecy):—clad self, close, clothe, conceal, cover (self), (flee to) hide, overwhelm.
But the letters shine a light on a profound revelation.
Kaf 20 = Anointing of the hand on the head, Redemption. Means: To Bend Down, Surrender, Palm of the Hand, Wing
It is interesting to note that the letter Kaf is shaped as a pipe bent in two places. The concept of bending oneself represents submitting oneself to a greater power.
The second letter is Samekh 60 = Pride, Conceit, Earthly. Picture: A Tree propped up by a piece of wood. Means: To Lean Upon, a Prop or Aid, Hold, Assist or Support – the heart of God
And the last letter is Hey 5 = Grace. Means: Revelation – 5 is the number of Torah, Behold, Give Attention, unfold or look upon – (if it comes at the end of a word: the meaning is based on the letter before)
This first covering is the Ram skins dyed red. Does that bring anything or anyone to mind?
Yahweh commanded the Israelites to sacrifice a ram for the trespass offering.
Leviticus 5:15 If a person commits a trespass, and sins unintentionally in regard to the holy things of the Lord, then he shall bring to the Lord as his trespass offering a ram without blemish from the flocks…
And in John 1:29 John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Yeshua was our substitute. He took our sins and gave us His righteousness.
Galatians 1:4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father
We see the ram first in Genesis 22:2, 6b, 8-13
Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
Abraham got up the next day, gathered the supplies needed, and set out with Issac. When Issac saw what Abraham brought for the offering, he asked, 6b“Where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
8 And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.
9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11 But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”
So he said, “Here I am.”
12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So, Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
The blood of a ram was also used in the consecration of the priesthood and the completed Tabernacle.
Exodus 29:19-22 “You shall also take the other ram, and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands on the head of the ram. 20 Then you shall kill the ram, and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and on the tip of the right ear of his sons, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar. 21 And you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar, and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments, on his sons and on the garments of his sons with him; and he and his garments shall be hallowed, and his sons and his sons’ garments with him…22b it is a ram of consecration
Samekh is the second letter. It is a picture of a Tree propped up by a piece of wood. Means: To Lean Upon, a Prop or Aid, Hold, Assist or Support – the heart of God
So, Kaf represents the aspect of submitting oneself to a greater power. And Samekh means to lean up for support – the heart of God.
Then the word covering ends with Hey.
Hey 5 = Grace. Means: Revelation – 5 is the number of Torah, Behold, Give Attention, unfold or look upon – (if it comes at the end of a word: the meaning is based on the letter before)
Hey here is a neon sign saying, “Look at that definition of Samekh and Kaf. There is a revelation here for you.
To me, these definitions point to many scriptures, but Philippians 2:5-11 spell out the story quite well.
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Then the fact that the Ram skins dyed red point to the blood. Again, there are other scriptures that we could quote. Here is a good one.
Colossians 1:19-20 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
The Ram Skins covering declared the life and sacrifice of our Savior who cleansed us from our sins.
The Badger Skins Covering continued the picture of the humility and submission of Yeshua. There isn’t a certainty if it was badger skins or seal skins. It was dark in color, and some scholars say it was possibly greyish-blue. It completely covered the ram’s skin dyed red and the two curtains. The beauty of the Tabernacle was hidden from public view.
Isaiah 53:1-3 is a scripture to consider about this badger skin covering.
Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
This finishes the curtains and coverings over the Tabernacle.
· The Linen Curtain – Righteousness
· Goat’s Hair Curtain – Sin Offering
· Ram Skins dyed red – Substitution
· Badger Skins – Protection and Covering
There will be one or two more posts to close this study. See you next week, God willing.
